A lot of my favorite raps have almost always used sampled beats. A beat cam in my head and so did the sample, but it was only one part of the song. I was wondering if you could add more samples to it form different songs as long as it sounds good and right, or you can only sample form that one song. |

Yes, but it has to be in the same scale (to sound "right").

Now that is hard because I don't know how to tell the scales on the songs I would like to sample. |

I know. That's why you have to pay attention very carefully to the chops you have. Do they go well with each other or they just sound good if played alone? |

Try to compose over it. Try adding a bassline, a piano, an organ, some horns, something to go with the sample. Use sampling but don't limit yourself to it |

Should the bass line, horns, or whatever be in the same scale also? |

dude no matter what you add, for it to sound good sonically it has to be in the same scale. That;s how music works. Try reading up on some music theory. That should help you because it sounds like you're taking random shots in the dark |

and use your ears.. If it sounds good to you, do it. The best way to evolve in your music is to train your ear. Peace, K.

@ Big O, if u can define music by ear then it will be a big help for you. 1 Another thing, if you know good music for ex: your sample go with it. You may not believe me but the beat will tell the ear what it needs. |

@K Beatz I have a song in mind for it but I cant get the acappella
@Kerouac I am a perfectest when it comes to my beats so it would bug me if it only sounds good and not great
@GrandTakerProduction the gerne of the usic is Gothic, and the groups name is midnight syndicate and the reason I am using them is becuase a lot of my rappers have sampled them. |

Hello Big_O!
Allow me to give you some insight in this matter. I am assuming you are doing sampling for Hiphop beats (correct me if i'm wrong). I will make this broader then your question, but all within the realm of Sampling and Hiphop production.
Yes, if your samples come from the same source (song) you have indeed more chances that all your "chops" (slices, or parts you took from the original song) will work better togheter (because the original song's composers already chose a "scale" to work with, when making that song you are sampling from).
I use this method a lot, but i am aware that this is not (would never claim this) the only, neither "absolute best" way to sample. It depends on your goals and vision. Also depends on your experience with sampling. It is easier for a beginner to start using samples from the same records to make a beat. For the reason stated above.
With that said, i would like to point out that using samples from different sources (songs, breaks) is possible, has been done a lot, is more common then u would think in days like these. And you can come up with crazy stuff that way.
I also want to point here that when u sample, you are not sampling just a particular "note" of the said musical scale, but a section of the song (many times with more then one instrument being played togheter in that "chop" you took from the original song).
I mention this because this is one of the biggest misconceptions when one ignores the roots of "Hiphop Aestethics".
Thinking about hiphop in the "Western Classical Music (European)" perspective. Don't get me wrong. It's good to know your scales and these and that, the whole music theory thing. But it is not paramount to Hiphop Production. And when i mean hiphop production i am def' not talking about you everyday "pop cross-overs". I mean, Hiphop! Otherwise we would not have a RZA, a DJ Premier, Prince Paul, Marley Marl, etc. It helps to know music theory, but it's not a must in sampling. Hiphop has it's own aesthetics, let me put it that way to make it simple. It's own "theory".
A Beatmaker (or if you prefer, a hiphop producer) uses sound stabs, musical phrases, drum breaks, bass fills and so on, as his sound "pallette" to create the desired "vibe". The hiphop vibe.
Learn your music theory, yes. But sampling in Hiphop Beatmaking, got it's own "theory" and, at first sight unspoken, rules.
Dunno if i made myself understood. And these is by no way a playing Vs sampling speech (want to make that clear cause i do both). But i would avice all those who sample or are serious about Hiphop Beatmaking, to read The Beat Tips Manual. An Excellent book on beatmaking, that adress this matter in a deep way.
Cheers.
Happy new year to all the WarBeats fam! |
