Sorry guy's but all of the suggestion given in this blog so far are really far from correct. HEADPHONES ARE NOT GOOD FOR MIXING. Specially when you are mixing someone else project. Every one ears are different so what you hear that sounds good or bad to you maybe is bad or good to somebody else. So there for headphones are not good for mixing. To start get you a nice set of powered near field monitors M-Audio BX 5 or KRK Rokit 5 or 6. Is does ones are to expensive to you good for Edirols or Alesis M1. And remember not to forget the cables. Good cables make the different too. |

Every one ears are different so what you hear that sounds good or bad to you maybe is bad or good to somebody else. So there for... You can't please everyone? I don't see what that has to do with headphones being bad for mixing. I mix solely with headphones because they are all I have and there is a fair ammount of noise in my apartment that can interfere with certain frequency ranges if I was able to afford monitors... the headphones block it out well enough, and IMO I am putting out some pretty decent mixes. (especially considdering my still relatively low experience level in mixing) The only real problems I see with using headphones is mixing the bass and the stereo image. |

Try a pair of Sony MDR-V150 headphones. I think those are pretty good. Only 25-30 dollars. Their what I use to mix & master with. I think there's a lot of people out here who have monitors and think that their mix & master sounds nice and clear. This is not the case. I think the only way to get a true m&m is through a pair of headphones. "Just my opinion". "Keep'em comin & Keep'em movin". |

Fortunately it's just your opinion I still work with headphones, I used to mix solely on headphones...but I really, really, really wouldn't recommend mixing solely on headphones... |

i agree with BASE... using monitors and headphones are probably the best way to go..a mixture of both. |

Its gonna come down to what you decide to use and get used to. Everyones been saying that the Dre's arent good for mixing due to the way they were designed and EQ'd, I agree, but ive had them for long enough that im used to how they respond to my mixes and can compensate for all of that. Well, as much as my self-taught, non-professional, bedroom beatmaking skills go. Im interested now in how a flatter response headphone would do for me.... |

I think everybody here knows they need to use monitors and headphones and whatever else you got. The OP asked which headphones were good because they can't afford to use the towers you guys have in your studios! One word: SONY MDR-V6. The pros been using them for over 20 years, the results speak for itself. You can't get flatter response and stunning clarity better for $60 bucks. |

I recently purchased Beyerdynamic DT770 Pros.. got them for sale on Back Friday at Guitar Center for about 170 dollars. While I don't know much about headphones- I do know that they're amazing sounding and very comfortable. |

I'll second the BeyerDynamic Headphones vote. I've heard multiple producers swear by them. They have one of the flattests frequency responses for the price range Another thing I heard from sound engineers around Nashville is that in order to hear bass frequencies correctly you should go with open back headphones rather than closed (noise cancelling). It's not as neat as having the complete silence, and others can hear what you're working on, but if you are by yourself it shouldn't be a problem. |

I never use headphones for mixing and mastering. I might use headphones when im recording/making beats late at night, but i'll switch to speakers when its time to mix it. |

It just depends on your ear... regardless. You're the tastemaster. Now if you were working on a project for someone else, then that'd be a different subject. But if it's for your self, I believe it's whatever makes you comfortable. |

Don't for a second consider beats lol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrcF-vaLDx4 That changed my entire perspective lol. He lists some CRAZY headphones that are ridiculously close to a flat frequency response. Because of him I invested and purchased the Denon AHD-7000 headphones, which are simply amazing. Check out Grado & Denon buddy, they're the best there is. Oh and Sennheiser is also really good haha! |
