    Hey WB fam,

I've been thinking of posting this a long time. I want you guys to tell me what in your opinion are THE ULTIMATE ESSENTIAL sounds/plugins/fx's for making typical modern day beats. I kow there are like tons of discussions about this topic, but in here I would rather have you like share your thoughts on what programs etc. to use and ofcourse why these are so great. Like tell me what u regularly use to make your beats, from a to z, for example, I use Sylenth1 like in every single beat i make for it's nice synths and arp's, there are so many presets u can grab it's insane, and tweaking the sounds is a piece of cake in this particular vst. I also often use ReFX Vanguard a lot, simply because I have a ton of presets, i can always find an interesting sound in this vst. I also like Sampletank 2 xxl, it's a lil bit dated but still plenty of good stuff in there, I mostly use this vst for my 'real' instruments, like strings/orchestra sounds. Ofcourse sometimes reFX Nexus 2 comes in handy sometimes, but I try to avoid using to much of it's sounds since i've heard them on so many tracks out there, and it's lacking real tweaking abilities to make the sounds sound more like my style. Furthermore I use Hypersonic 2 mostly for it's (famous?!) miami brass stacked with some other sounds. This is the only 'modern' day brass I know, I would like to have some alternatives, don't be polite share your knowledge.

Im still looking for some (more) dope drumkits, I use this one kick drum from a drum kit I found surfing the net, it's called the Luke tracks drum kit, supposedly he is an internet producer who puts out sound compilations every once in a while, some are real crappy but the kick# 2 works perfectly for me with a lil papi jay treatment  I also like this kit by the name of SIHD (Sounds in HD) plenty of nice drums, I mostly use this kit for snares and sometimes claps. Another dope must have for your collection is the Akai MPC drumkit, these contain the sounds from the hardware, I also rock the Maschine kit, they all contain high quality sounds since they are all coming straight outta the hardware. If you guys have some suggestions regarding drums post them please, I sometimes find it difficult to find clean, crisp ones so any help is appreciated. one can never have enough of quality drums!

Now The FX's, currently I'm on a learning journey to master what fx's do and which are the best, i'm still a rookie on this so don't judge me. I am trying to figure out Izotope and Waves lately. I either just throwed izotope on the master fx slot and choose the hiphop preset or I would use the Waves L3 Ultramaximiser to make my stuff sound more full n rich sounding. Maybe I am using it completely in the wrong way and that's what this is for. I want to have some insight in how my beatmaking colleagues' workspace looks like and learn from it. I actually don't use that much FX's, some Stereo Shaper on the drums n percussion, sometimes on sounds too. Some reverb, delay and a Fruity Parametric EQ 2 on most channels with the 40hz-18khz cut preset n that's mostly it. So in a nutshell that's how I do my shit, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask em or tell me what to to differently.

    Thanks in advance y'all,

    Peace from Amsterdam,

    Papi Jay

P.S. Check out my 2nd sampled beat ever and also be sure to check out my latest beat which I have still to finish but has good potential!

I use FL Studio 9 producer's edition, I'll get that out of the way first.

For my drums, I usually use stock sounds and EQ the shit out of them with Fruity Parametric EQ 2.

For bass, I either EQ a stock sound or use Massive by Native Instruments. This is an extremely popular VST, especially with electronic producers, more specifically dubstep. But I've found that if you know what you're doing (which I don't) or if you sit there and mess with the knobs and change the settings and just experiment long enough, you can come up with just about any type of bass you may be looking for. It works as a synth too.

It used to be that when I'd want a piano in my beats, I'd go straight to Fruity Keys and only use the "dark piano" preset. But I found a freeware VST awhile back called mda Piano (not to be confused with mda ePiano) that sounds just a tad bit better. If anyone can tell me what "the best" piano VST is, that'd be great because I generally like to add at least a little piano to most of my stuff.

When I sample, I use Edison to create the sample, and Wavepad to remove any fuzziness.

I have also built up a library of around 6,000+ sound effects in .wav and .mp3 format (mostly .mp3 in order to manage storage space) over the years. I use a lot of random odd sound effects that just feel "right" to me when I'm making a beat. I've got everything you could need including but not limited to:

    - Gunshots
    - Breaking glass
    - Explosions
    - Animals
    - Nature sounds (rain, lightning, thunder, fire, splashes, volcanoes, etc.)
    - Household appliances (blender, dryer, microwave, toilet, etc.)
    - Fighting sounds (punches, kicks, slaps, stabs, swings, falls, bones breaking, flesh being torn, etc.)
    - Vehicle sounds (planes, trains, automobiles, boats, even cars from different time periods)
    - Classic cartoon noises (bonks, boings, bangs, etc.)
    - Voice clips from movies, shows, youtube videos, and other media sources

Seriously, I've got a lot of fucking sound effects, I'll share if anyone wants them, just PM me lol

    But here's what I'm missing:

    - A good or at least halfway decent brass VST
    - A chord progression generator (to get me by until I get a grip on it)
    - A way of scratching on my laptop with no midi devices of any sort (turntable VST?)
    - A good mic to record the ridiculously shameless lyrics I tend to come up with in the process of making a beat

I dunno how people are about sharing their sources around here, but I'd be glad to share what I have and would greatly appreciate any suggestions, tips, criticism, etc. that any of you may have

    Here's a few tips:

    Progression Generator: http://www.guitarknowledgenet.com/progression_builder.php

I've been looking for a good brass for years but I have found other horns that I love... search DVS Saxophone and MilesTone - which actually models all the horns. EXTREMELY REALISTICALLY. Best when used with a wind controller.

You can scratch with the Fruity WaveShaper I found out recently but I'm not as good at using it as some people are.

I'll be sending you a PM very soon.

If you want to just scratch sounds then go vinyl.
If you want to scratch your accapella's then i guess the best thing is a midi turntable but i dont know.

Well, this is a long shot... :/

I don't use ONE vst or ONE effect... :/

    LOL
But if I had to choose one of each it would be sth like this:

If I want a Piano, "True Pianos" is the best, so far
If I want a Electric Guitar - "RealLPC"
Sub Bass - usually, for Sub Bass, I use a soundfont called "SE 03 Sub.SF2"
For Realistic Bass - "SI - Bass Guitar"
    ePiano - Lounge Lizard
Synth - Damn... Too many... :/ Latelly i've been using "ReFX PlastiCZ"

As for FX, it goes sth like this:

EQ - PEQ from Stock FL

Reverb - "Classic Reverb" and "MReverb"

Stereo enhancing/shaping - "Fruity Stereo Enhancer", "MStereoExpander" and a 3D Shaper I don't really know the name, with no visual interface at all, CPU-Freakin'-Eater but delivers great results

    Amp for Guitars/Bass - "Guitar Rig 3"

Compressors - Fruity Limiter and Fruity Compressor

Limiter for Master Track "Classic Master Limiter"

Delay - Fruity ones, and FabFilter's "Timeless"

... It goes on and on...

Wow this is a really tough question but is interesting to see what everyone else uses!

I have FL Studio 9 Producer Edition. I use an M-Audio Oxygen 25 midi keyboard to do most of my melodies and stuff. I don't have legit monitors, but I use a Logitech speaker system with a decent sub so I can at least monitor my bass levels a little better than before (I was using an audio cable into the input jack of a 15 watt guitar amp lol).

As for instruments, these are the main ones I have been using lately...

    - SampleTank Free
    - Zeta+
    - Toxic Biohazard
    - Synth 1
    - Poizon and Sawer

As for effects, gotta love PEQ2 and Fruity Compression. I also use some stuff like glitch, overdrive, tweak bench's assortment of effects and reverb and delay.

It's nice to see people pickin up on this topic. I'm curious how it looks after like a year or so, Lot's of handy stuff in here then. Oh yeah, I changed to Logic Pro 9 since I got myself a macbook pro, but I still use FL in bootcamp. They're both fun, but Logic lacks the intuitiveness like FL studio. I now kinda changed my 'arsenal', I use kontakt 4 with a whole bunch of libraries. From keys to perfectly sampled oldschool synthesizers, you can find it all for kontakt. Only thing is it's not rare to find a library with a size of like 25 gig. LOL! But then again the quality is awesome 9/10 times! I also recommend Spectrasonics Omnisphere, lately i've been on a journey through their massive 40 something gig library full of interesting shizzle. And also look out for Tone2 Gladiator. And last but not least, for you lazy cats out there, I recently bought this FX's package from Waves, it's called the 'One knob series', basically what it does is... you get like 6 fx's, like a phattener, a brightener and stuff like that, and instead of giving you this whole confusing(?) screen full of knobs, it just has one knob. And to be honest, it does a good job at what it advertises, look it up peeps.

Keep this topic alive so we can like spot upcoming vst(i)'s/fx and enjoy them all.

Well, I've fullfilled my duty, I updated my post... LOL!

Oh it looks like I still have to list more plugs!

Then, this may surprise you all but my new favorite plugin is FL's own..... KEYS! Yes, that piano plugin that y'all didn't know what to do with!

Once I took time with it, I realized just how powerful it actually is and how beautiful it CAN sound all by itself. Hear this song I made using ONLY the plugin and this awesome reverb plugin, Classic Reverb:

AND this song where I play the Keys over a sample + using the drums from my kit I've been working (see my thread for more info)

    Ok that's enough pimpin lol

If you guys need limitering/metering you NEED to be using JB Barricade Pro. Shame on you if you haven't been.

@EX01, what's the big difference with using a stock limiter? And I totally agree with your anti loudness war statement, but how do you make your mixes 'BANG', without heavily compressing it etc.?!

And by the way, anybody working in Logic in here? Anybody know some cool ass AU (not VST(i)) plugins?!

    Thanks in advance...

    Great topic,

For drums i use everything i come across and just sample it. (digital and analog) Sometimes i try some free drumkits i find here on wb or anywhere else. Sometimes i record drumlike sounds like me banging my head against the table trying to activate my creativity :-)

As for fx i mostly use fl studio's own. Apart from that i use the 'reggae style' delay and echo vst effects from 'interruptor. Wiiicked.   (http://www.interruptor.ch/vst_overview.shtml )

As for instruments.. Again mostly sampling alltough lately i'm very happy with this minimoog vst i found. Love to mess around with all the knobs.(http://www.vst4free.com/free_vst.php?id=405 )

For the future i'd like to record more myself. I'm not a great musician so i'll just be looking for cool/weird sounds like percussion hits, old instruments, toy instruments, .. etc.

    Peace.

    K.

@Papi Jay: That's a question that I don't think I can answer as well as a pro would plus it's 3AM where I am (but it is nice to see you guys all up with me lol) but I'mma try anyway.

I think a lot of people either don't understand how a compressor works or think its only for making everything sound at the evenly leveled, or both. And that's a shame. The best thing I think you can do is to keep the dynamics as much as possible and really exaggerate them even with compressing. I'm not one of those anti-compression anti-technology guys who had to walk up the hill to school in the snow and all that lol - if you have to use it go ahead an use it. Just try not to crush the poor thing to death if you can help it. If you need the kicks loud put the comp on that and have the rest of the sounds at a lower volume around them (that's what i do now, in the past i used to think the only thing that mattered was getting my ish to BANGGGG), have the kick (in this example) peaking higher than the rest of the instruments. When it's time to use the limiter on it it keeps the dynamics that way, assuming you've set the limiter correctly.

Another thing you should be doing if you aren't already is making sure you EQ those instruments as cleanly and subtractively as possible, it's a lot easier to increase the volume that way. Make sure every instrument plays in it's range and no more/less.

ANOTHER PLUGIN I NEED TO RECOMMEND IS PSP's VINTAGEMETER.

@EX01: Thanks for the useful info and the funny explanation... (walking uphill in the snow )

Just a couple questions. I do EQ my tracks, but you say I have to make sure every instrument plays in ITS RANGE, so can I conclude that I should cut off the parts with less dynamics and tonality in it for every track? And doing so kinda isolate all those frequencies until I have the whole spectrum covered? It does makes sense that it'll sound 'cleaner'. And last but not least, in Logic, when I put a limiter on a track and it has to reduce the volume a lot, I seem to get these weird artifacts on my sound. So how to properly use a limiter? Or am i just using a crappy one? (Logic's default limiter)

I like PSP's stuff, gonna check out the one you mentioned..

    Peace from Amsterdam!

@Papi Jay: I know that when I tried my limiter out for the first time it made a lot of pumping noises - Pompey told me how to set it best in my thread here: http://warbeats.com/Community/Forums/aft/7545

This one seems good too: http://warbeats.com/Community/Forums/aft/8015

I think a lot of it at least for me comes down more to the arrangement of the instruments than the effects you apply to them. If I can't get a sound from the tracks that I want after 50 takes using my favorite plugin, synth, whatever I just decide to either replace the instrument or have it play a different part. Like have the stings play thirds instead of fifths, or use a subbass instead of a fingered bass, etc. So try that too, it might be just the thing you need if it feels like your sounds are fighting with each other!

if your limiter is reducing the volume a lot, there are 1 of 2 things going on...

    1. your instruments are too loud going into the limiter
    2. your threshhold is too low.

    or a combination of both.

rms is where you need to shift your focus towards. a lot of the "loudness" you hear in commercial tracks is NOT done during the mix, but during mastering...by engineers who have had years of experience and specialized rooms and equipment. i cannot STAND when i make my tracks "louder" and i hear all that stuff screeching at me...so i just concentrate on doing a really good mix.
