Which do you guys use and/or think is better? I was thinking about getting a laptop so I can make beats on the go (that's why I got my axiom 25), but I've been with desktops like all my life, and I'm just used to the setup. |

Im running on a laptop but desktops are cheaper and u get more power for ur money. How often are u gonna be makin beats on the go? are u gonna take anythng else needed to make beats with u too? like speakers... cos theresno way u can mix on any built in speakers from a laptop... it all adds up to the things u will be carrying. Do u travel away from home a lot? or is it more a case of taking it to friends houses? I think u just gotta look and see what u actually need with u and the costs of the actual comp ur thinking of and decide what u really want and need. I dont think one is better than the other... my laptop runs fine and is pretty powerful but the downside was the price, i dont take it anywhere which lately has me wondering aybe i should have gotten a desktop but i do love my laptop for what other features it gives me. thats another thing... is it purely for music? |

It probably wouldnt just be for music. I'd probably love the convenience of it tho. If I needed to take it anywhere, I could. We travel a lot, like we are going to california like next week, and who knows if i get a melody in my head? I normally just record them on my phone, but it would be better to lay it down in the hotel. Another reason I dont use a laptop now is because I had one before and the fan kept going out |

If you're on the move a lot then it's wise to get a Laptop. Do remember that laptops overheat alot, so be careful in your selection (avoid Sony and HP stuff and you should be good.) |

Laptops are great but for production stay with a home PC. I use a laptop though, just for your information. With Regards, Rolf Vohs |

Desktops are better. More options for connections, soundcards, DSP units, etc... I went down the laptop route myself and I regret it. Unfortunately I got an HP and OMFG it sucks. I also got a Dell and it's o.k. but I find myself using my old desktop more often than I'd care to admit due to some hardware limitation or another. Laptops are portable and as long your willing to either spend a lot or deal with said limitations then cool. But if it was my main or only setup... I would just get the Desktop and get a used laptop (preferably a Dell cause XP Pro disks is all around for Dells) I haven't tried Windows 7 but Vista... I hate it. I can't wait to get XP pro on a Desktop with maxed out ram. |

Good point there. So listen to us and get a Desktop. Besides I own a Dell laptop, they are very good. Nice all-round laptops. They just have too many extra features that are useless. |

Yeah, it's not only the "useless" features that get you but sometimes the motherboard or the way the Bios is configured or the video card (some "advanced" video gaming cards can actually **** up your drivers for the sound card.) So the "simple" nature of their ish makes for less complications usually. Dells are built for maximum compatibility as opposed to maximum performance which means when you upgrade (which you most certainly will) you tend to run into less problems. The reliability of the systems was suspect for awhile but they seem to have gotten control of the CD drive, power supply and laptop battery problem since I was working there as far as I know. Again, I wonder if there will be a "vintage PC" market for XP Pro computers soon with all the problems I'm having with Vista... has anyone tried Windows 7 with FL Studio? |

It really depends, I have a laptop because I need it for school and I'm not at home cuz I live in the dorm at school so a laptop is all I can imagine having, but if you can settle down, get a desktop, so much better for everything than a laptop... |

honestly like people are saying above, laptops are more ideal for the on the go production. Only if u travel alot. BUT, another thing that a laptop may come in really handy is ur Business side of beat making, sales, and watnot. Doing all ur email work, IMing, contracts and blabla imo should be done on another computer, just to keep everything safe and clean. I unfortunately i dont do this, but if i had the chance to get a laptop i would definately use it for that purpose. |

ok say if u left home for a vacation, and ur still getting ur leases in, you want to make sure that u get the beats to ur buyer within 24 hours. A laptop with all ur beats as MP3's on it will really help u meet ur goal. As for keeping it clean, i mean like having just 1 computer for ur music, so u dont have to risk any crap from happening to it. Desktop = Make ur music, Laptop= Send out ur tracks, IM, contracts, business.

This is going to be one of those "do as I say, not as I do" replies haha...
Basically if I was you, I'd look at how much money you'd have to spend on a laptop to really do the job for you...I'm talking about with enough memory to store all your sounds, the speed to run all of your music ishhh, plus any games you wanna put on it...THEN I'd get a PC with those same specs, save yourself a fortune, and use the leftover money to get a cheaper netbook or laptop. Then you can put basic FL Studio on it with a few sounds, so if you get inspired on the go you can stick the basics down then switch it over to your master music PC when you get back to the crib.
The cheap/second hand laptop you would get wouldn't be phenomenal, but you'd be able to web-browse, play some games, you'd have all the convenience with the ability to make basic beats, but you'd still have your music PC there at home with every sound, every plug in for mastering and finishing them tracks off.

I would only use a laptop when i am not home. I think the desktop is more upgradeable. Correct me if im wrong!

I'm a very basic kinda guy and just have a cheap lil netbook that my wife got me.It's a lil limited but not bad overall,FL uses alot of memory so I think I'm gonna upgrade the card.I like the portability and if the power goes out it automaticly switches to battery so I don't need to worry about that.I think it's just a matter of personal preference or budget mostly. |

I produce everything on a laptop, and the biggest restriction for me is space. I'm only working with a 60 gig HD and only have 1 left. I haven't had the opportunity to work with a desktop yet, but I know I really want to try it. I can't say which is better, but either way you go make sure you have enough HD space for however long you're going to use it. |
