How many of yall can make a hot beat on the spot. Meaning if someone came up to you and was like " Yo I got this idea for this song, heres the hook, can you make something for that..etc" and you start making the beat right there in front of them. I see alot of the top producers who possess this skill and just make it in front of a client like its nothing. I know a skill like this could really separate the producers from the beat makers. I cant make a good beat with people around me at all. Im always worried that it might not be a hot one, cause lets be serious we only let people hear the good beats we make. I also dont like when people try to tell you what to add or what to take out. But ya, how many of yall can do this and do you have any tips for someone like me?

To make beats on the spot like you're talking about takes lots of practice. Producers who do that have something in their mind already and just manifesting it to recording. I myself am still in trying to find my sound but if I start playing for a minute I can create pretty good beats on the spot. |

It really depends in my case... probably on the stars or position of the moon or what I ate or something Sometimes I can open up FL and instantly push out several hot beats, and other times I just end up throwing garbage for like a week, even with no one around. Usually I need some kind of inspiration to get started... maybe a unique drum pattern or a good hook I have in my head. I have found that an example of a hook or lyrics in general is some really good inspiration for me... it can take some time though before something really works. As mrsimon stated, though, it definately does take practice to make hopt beats... in general, let alone on the spot. |

I usally do pretty well under that kinda surcomstance but take into fact all the top producers also have many hidden skills we dont know about.... Knowledge such as piano lessons, scale knowledge what ever the aritsts wants its good to know what scale you could use for that mood... happy, sad, angry etc...
All comes with experience, of course like said I think on the spot production is for those who have a decent amount of Piano skills, im still workin my way to that. Either self taught or by lessons |

Im actually very gud on the spot. I had an artist come thru the other day and I already had a beat for him but he said that it isn't really what he wanted so he gave me a better explanation of what it was he wanted and i got it done in like 45 min. Of course I had to go back and spend time mixin the beat after he laid his vocals. i seem to flow smoothly when im on the spot. |

Now that I think about it, that might help me if the person told me the sound he was looking for. But thats another thing what if I cant produce that sound or if I did it sounded wack. I guess thats were the practice comes in. Maybe I should practice doing other genres of beats that I usually wouldnt make. |

my best beats so far were beats i did on the spot, simply because the people i was making them for were wack and i just wanted to get it over with. when i dont care if my shit is hot, its hot, when i want it to be hot, i start obsessing about every little detail and eventually fuck up. its a gawt damn curse |

I can do it now, but it wasn't always that way..lol. I work with a lot of rnb artist who usually come in with lyrics already or at least an idea whereas rappers usually want to hear a bunch of beats and then pick one, so I guess I had to learn to work in that way. One thing that helped me was to make beats based on a concept just to see if I could do it. I would ask my friends, family, etc. for ideas and then tried to create a beat based on a storyline. Another thing I do is write down song ideas on a piece of paper all the time and then put them in a jar next to the computer. When I have down time I pull a slip out and then I give myself an hour to do it. This forces me to not get sidetracked and end up with nothing. Some advise though....if your client is at the desk with you don't show them all your soundfiles. I had a guy once that I sat with for like three hours going from kit to kit...oh yea runnners!....on yea timberland!...oh yea...YOU WASTING MY TIME..LOL...never got paid a dime, but that taught me to do it different. Now I have a folder of a few sounds instead of all of them that the client can see. Some 808s, 909s, claps, snares, couple of custom sounds and a piano and thats it. In general I play in the key of C for a happy song or an A for a sad song. You can always change the keys to fit the song later. |
