There are 3 types of VSTs, Instruments (VSTi), Effects and Midi effects. I'm not aware of a letter used after VST for Effects or Midi (arpeggiators and such).

DXi is a Direct X instrument, instead of using the programming language designed by Stienberg (VST) it uses Microsoft DX language.

Kinda like the difference between Flash and Java is I guess one way of explaining it. Direct X is... IMO kinda buggy and so I don't really use DXi plugins all that much. Hope that helps.
