I got to the easy listening and Jazz channel on cable to relax for a while then I got to the oldies, Funk, Rock N Roll channels and get an idea of what I want then I try coming up with something! |

I get into Youtube to find whatever inspires me... Ive been searching lately and Ive found dope artists such as J Cole, Styles P. and Jadakiss, as well as hopsin... They dnt sound that much but they talk bout shit that inspires me... Also hearing to other genres help me takin new ideas 4 my songs but basically all I hear is old school Hip-Hop and West Coast Rap |

I use my headphones and listen to pandora everyday that im at work. for like 10 hours a day. Zomboy radio for the win! Artists that inspire me in my style are porter robinson, liquid stranger, kill the noise, skrillex, chasing shadows, feed me, etc etc. all those great great great dubbers. |

I like to listen to other hip-hop songs since i make hip-hop beats so i can get an idea and vibe off a beat. But i also love to listen to video game music and orchestral music as it has many melody's and variation that you can get many idea's out of.  |

When I'm in a hip hop mode, I like to take a break and listen to a lot of stuff produced by Dre, and a lot of Gang Starr, Common, Talib Kweli...that kind of stuff. It usually inspires me. |

I get really inspired when I listen to Rick Ross, as silly as that might sound. When he raps on a beat by Kanye, No ID,Just Blaze, or the Justice League, it gets me pumped up to take on life. Besides the producers I just mentioned, I also listen to Clams Casino, James Blake, and Actress for inspiration. Basically, I listen to producers I think are better than me. |

I just do it the other way around. I keep an open mind 'all the time untill i hear something that inspires me.
Sometimes it's music i hear. (or have searched for) But lots of time it's just ideas for a new tune coming from sounds i hear while i'm not making music. Sometimes it's situations, images, .. Anything can be but i never know what will be inspiring me till it hits me.
That said it can be any music no matter the musical genre.
As i'm using lots of samples to create my music I'm diggin for samples alot. Mostly i'm searching for 70's music. (prog rock etc..)
But i'm not limiting my sampling to that. If it sounds good and fits my tracks i'm working on, i'm using it..

Thanks for all the different responses. I'm inspired by all the different ways you all inspire yourself. For those of you that create hip-hop records, what do you turn too? Sometimes listening to hiphop isn't inspiring. Lyrics and all. Maybe it's just me, But I listen to music the majority of the day.
I was wondering if any of you could recommend some jazz artists? Or Anyone you think is great at their craft? |

I you start of listening to jazz i would recommend you get the album 'kind of blue' by Miles Davis. It's one of the greatest (jazz) albums ever made..
Some other 'great names in jazz' i like are Thelonious monk, dizzy Gillespie, john coltrane, Art blakey,.. (if you put these in to last fm you'll get many more great artists)
Discovering jazz, there's no end to it..
